Shop 28g Postal Lane,350 Bourke St, Melbourne
Lovely place to visit down one of Melbourne’s faux laneways. Or perhaps it was a proper service laneway at one stage? I digress.
So it’s mostly outdoor seating, although all covered. Great for a warm, balmy evening like it was last night (Valentine’s Day, oooh!). We went early, around 6:30pm, so there were only a handful of tables filled. Service was quick and friendly, food came out looking pretty good, flavours were decent enough. Although I really need to stop ordering ramen at any random place that serves it. I was a bit surprised when they asked me if I wanted a soy or miso based soup with my ramen – I had just assumed that it would be a slow cooked tonkotsu broth with my charshu! So everything in the bowl was fine, except for the soup base. Oh well.
Aside from that, hubby’s sukiyaki don was very tasty. Our agedashi tofu contained four (!!) pieces of tofu instead of the usual three, with lots of other yummy bits accompanying the broth. And we both got a bit of food envy when we saw our table neighbour’s massive tray of sushi arrive – it looked good!
All in all, great place to visit for a relaxed, casual dinner. I would probably avoid it on a cold, wet and wintry day though!
Now for some truly terrible food photography…

Agedashi tofu – plentiful!

Charshu ramen in soy based soup – ok, except for the broth, which is kind of the make or break of the dish.

Sukiyaki don – the phone flash doesn’t make it look all that appealing, but it was yummy.
